  • 3 ½ pounds sweet-tart apples (such as Honeycrisp or Braeburn)
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • ½ cup packed brown sugar
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon allspice
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon bourbon or amaretto
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • ½ tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (for topping)
  • ½ cup packed brown sugar (for topping)
  • ¼ cup rolled oats
  • ¼ teaspoon cinnamon (for topping)
  • 6 tablespoons butter, melted (for topping)
  • vanilla bean ice cream (for serving)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F.
  2. Prepare the pie crust and refrigerate.
  3. Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
  4. Add sliced apples to the skillet and coat them with butter.
  5. Sprinkle brown sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon, allspice, and nutmeg over the apples; stir well.
  6. Lower heat to medium-low; cook for about 5 minutes until apples soften.
  7. Stir in bourbon, vanilla extract, apple cider vinegar, flour, and cornstarch. Cook over low heat for 3-5 minutes until thickened.
  8. Remove from heat; let cool for at least 30 minutes.
  9. Make the crumble topping by mixing flour, brown sugar, oats, and cinnamon in a medium bowl.
  10. Pour in melted butter; stir with a fork until crumbles form resembling wet sand.
  11. Remove pie crust from refrigerator; place it on a large baking sheet to catch spills during baking.
  12. Pour cooled apple filling into crust; top with dutch crumble topping.
  13. Bake for 50-65 minutes until filling is bubbly and crumble is golden brown.
  14. Allow pie to cool on a wire rack for at least 4 hours before cutting into it.
