  • 2 sticks of butter (room temperature)
  • 1 1/4 cups sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup milk (room temperature)
  • 1/2 cup sour cream (room temperature)
  • 1/2 cup shortening (Crisco)
  • 6 cups sifted powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (177°C). Butter and flour three 6-inch cake tins and line them with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the cake flour, salt, baking powder, and baking soda. Set aside.
  3. In another bowl, mix milk, sour cream, and vanilla; set aside.
  4. Using a stand mixer or handheld mixer, beat butter and sugar on medium speed until smooth and creamy (about 3 minutes).
  5. Gradually add egg whites while mixing on low speed until fully incorporated; increase speed for another minute.
  6. Alternate adding dry ingredients and milk mixture in two batches, mixing just until combined.
  7. Pour batter evenly into prepared pans and bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  8. Cool cakes for 15-20 minutes in pans before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
